A "thread lift" or "suture lift" procedure is a unique innovation in non-surgical rejuvenation for the face and neck. Not as radical as a full surgical face /neck lift, a suspension thread lift can give the look of freshness, wellness or a less tired look with less downtime and less cost. A thread lift uses a modification of the standard type of suture threads that have been used in medicine for many years. When inserted under the skin, the suture thread is pulled up to lift or tighten the targeted area. This restores the structure of the face, reversing the ageing trends of everything "heading south". The brow, cheekbone area, jowls and upper neck are the first parts of the face to sag, and these are particularly good areas for threading. The lift that is obtained is determined by the type and number of threads used and the amount of pull required. The type of look and results required are different for different people, and needs to be specifically tailored to give the desired results. This will be evaluated during the initial consultation.

Current solutions exist, but choices have to be made: either to restore volume, using targeted injections, or to tighten the skin, by means of more invasive interventions. Restoring the “triangle of youth” without having to resort to surgery is now possible by repositioning, providing volume, and stimulating lost collagen production thanks to the innovative technology of the Silhouette Soft treatment. The face is redefined, volume restored, and the effects of ageing are significantly reduced.

There are many branded "lifts" on the market, so this can be very confusing. After much research, Dr De Aguiar uses “Silhouette Soft” thread lift as the product of choice. It is an FDA cleared minimally invasive technique used to lift and tighten sagging tissue in the mid to lower face, brow or neck. In 3 years, more than 130 000 treatments have been carried out all over the world.

Silhouette Soft comes in the form of resorbable suture with resorbable bidirectional cones. These components are totally resorbable in 8-12 months for the cones and 18-24 months for the suture. It is made in the United States and its development was based on six years of experience in suture suspension with cones used in reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.

Silhouette Soft offer’s several unique and innovative advantages. The suture and cone structure provides an immediate suspension (lift) of sagging tissues with firmer, fresher facial contours and improvement in facial volume. The suspension over the mid-face can enhance the cheekbone structure. Furthermore, as the cones absorb, a mild inflammatory reaction is stimulated resulting in production of new collagen and elastin (tissue components that thin during aging), in a process known as re-dermalisation.

This is performed as an office based procedure and takes about 30 minutes. After careful assessment, the areas to be lifted are identified and small amounts of local anaesthetic are injected. The threads are inserted under the skin via tiny pin-prick incisions. The thread is then tightened in order to achieve a symmetrical internal lift. This technique leaves no scars and can be successfully used for all areas of the face and neck resulting in a fresher and younger look. Recovery time is minimal and patient can quickly go back to their full social life.

A Silhouette suture lift improves sagging of the face, brow or neck and helps restore an optimum angle of the skin in the neck. These techniques are best suited to younger patients with mild aging changes. Moderate to severe aging changes would more likely benefit from a more traditional facelift. Before any suture or thread lift procedure, it is very important to understand the capability of the procedure and what CAN and what CAN’T be achieved. If you are expecting the same results as a surgical face or neck lift procedure, then this is not the appropriate procedure for you. It is important to remember that this procedure is non-invasive and it takes about 60-90 days to see the final result, as the result will depend largely on the skin’s condition and healing ability. Silhouette Suture lifting techniques do not replace surgery. However, they can be used to further improve the results of neck and facelift surgery, OR they can be preventative in younger patients delaying or even preventing the need for surgical intervention. These threads assist the Doctor in repositioning the treated tissue, but do not remove excess tissue. So the tightening part of this procedure is seen after a couple of months once the skin has had the opportunity to lay down the new collagen and elastin which has been triggered by the insertion of the thread. The other great advantage of this is that Silhouette Suture lifts can be repeated over time if necessary, whereas multiple surgeries are highly inadvisable. The Silhouette sutures described here may be retightened during a secondary procedure or further threads may be added as necessary.

When performed by an experienced thread-lift surgeon, the thread-lift surgical procedure is very safe however as with all cosmetic surgical treatments there are some risks involved. Infection is one of the most common complications of surgery. It usually happens within one to six weeks of surgery. In the majority of cases an infection can just be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of infection include fever as well as severe tenderness, redness, and swelling. In rare cases you may also experience numbness or lack of sensitivity in the treated area. Uneven or asymmetrical results are another risk but the chances of this occurring are minimized by seeing a highly experienced and accredited practitioner. The most undesirable complication of thread-lift surgery is migration of sutures, or sutures / cones that become visible or palpable under the skin. If this happens, massage of the area usually resolves the problem. Rarely, you may require a small additional surgery to correct the problem or remove the threads completely. Because no excess skin is removed, unlike a face-lift, some people may experience a slight bunching or puckering of the skin where it has been pulled tighter. This usually resolves spontaneously within a few weeks.
